One of my goals has been to travel through all 50 states by the time I am 40. Mississippi and Arkansas were two of my last five, so I planned a trip through the Mississippi Delta to knock them off the list. The amount of culture, especially the music and food, made it an unexpectedly memorable trip.
I invited Ryan to come a long and we flew into Springfield, Missouri and hit the road. We dropped down into Arkansas, through a the very strange entertainment town of Branson, Missouri. They definitely were not targeting our demographic, since we aren’t fans of country music and don’t have a head full of gray hair!
We then continued on to Memphis where we spent a couple days enjoying the food and music on Beale Street. We also did a tour of Sun Studios, where Elvis, Johnny Cash and many others got their start.
From their we headed down the Mississippi Delta and enjoyed the food and some blues clubs along the way. We even stopped and looked around an abandoned mansion that was on the Mississippi River, where I happened upon a National Geographic from the month and year I was born.
We then headed down to Louisiana and enjoyed a swamp tour (who knew that gators loved hot dogs and marshmallows?) and visited one of my favorite breweries, Abita. We finished off the trip with time in New Orleans, where we enjoyed the amazing food and some great jazz.
It was a trip I’ll never forget and one that I would highly recommend! – McCory
